Very Good. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

It's all about training as a Medical Examiner at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Well worth the time spent reading the book. Plenty of science with a counterpoint of being strongly emotion-provoking. This is not a book for the faint of heart or those with no stomach for gritty reality. I found the book to be a sort of emotional roller coaster, sometimes choking back tears at the deaths of the most innocent victims.I find some faults with the book:(1) It has no index, so when a technical term is reused chapters later, readers without the advantage of a photographic memory may find it difficult to locate the term's explanation in the text;(2) There are no references to the storied history of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner; The transformation of death investigation from a crude political and often corrupt trade into a scientific discipline began there in New York City with Dr Charles Norris in 1917.Readers that find Working Stiff compelling are bound to be equally engaged with The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York by Deborah Blum. This later book has also been made into an installment of the PBS TV series, The American Experience: The Poisoner's Handbook. The episode is particularly well done and worth viewing by those that liked Working Stiff. TPHB is not as scientifically/technically rigorous as it could be, so think of it as a history book, not a scientific treatise.

I'm in a very peripherally-related medical field (meaning I have rudimentary knowledge of most of what she talks about) and, like the author, am fascinated by the human body and how it works. So, reads like these are really interesting for me. She, like my favorite science writer Mary Roach, has a droll wit and an easy-to-follow storytelling voice. (She doesn't jump around a lot and you can always follow what's happening.) There's nothing much to say beyond her writing is lovely (a rarity these days and the lack of good grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc. often times causes me to abandon a book partway through) and she's funny. If you're browsing this book, the subject matter obviously intrigues you, so I can say to go for this. It's an easy/fast read (I read this over a 2-day camping trip) that can be easily put down/picked back up wherever you leave off. (In my case, this was perfect because being distracted by a rambunctious Husky who only rests for 10 minutes at a time doesn't allow for you to sit down and read something like "War and Peace.")Even if you don't have any background knowledge of the human body, it's written clearly and often reiterates the same thing 2 or 3 times, each more layman than the last. While I find this a little distracting (I don't want something explained multiple times), books, TV, movies do this all the time so I know it's for the masses who may like a clearer, less-technical explanation. I can't fault a writer for that. It's great and I already know 2 people to whom I'm going to loan this - a highly-recommended read.

I love medical stuff - nonfiction preferred - and this is are really good one. Dr. Melinek takes the reader through making her decision to go into pathology after after a grueling and almost career-ending stint as a general surgeon. I for one am glad she did because this book is the story of her training at the medical examiner's office in New York City, learning how to determine and document the manner and mode of 262 human deaths. Additionally, she was in New York and involved in her training on September 11, 2001 and became part of the enormous team of doctors recruited to examine, identify, and document the human remains of that tragedy.I thoroughly enjoyed this book - basically couldn't put it down, and kudos also to Dr. Melinek's husband, T.J., who co-authored it with her.

Literally...the most fascinating book I have ever read. She takes you, in a gentle way, through the work of a medical examiner conducting autopsies after a huge variety of causes of death. It is as though you are in the room for the autopsies...without the smells! You hear the stories of what happened to people prior to them ending up in the New York City ME's office. I could not get to the next page fast enough. The most touching part of the book was a total surprise to me...the traumatic, noble, and tireless work of being a medical examiner for the 9/11 terror incident in NYC. I let my friend borrow this book - she finished it and before she even got it back to me had searched for more work by Melinek. I hope she writes more books!

This book describes Judy Melinek's two-year ordeal as a New York City chief medical examiner. Although I am a medical professional who deals with many gory bodies and scenes, I sometimes found Judy Melinek's self-described trials and tribulations as a medical examiner hard to read. Therefore, my squeamish stomach serves as a testament to Ms. Melinek's strong writing ability. Stimulating the reader's five senses, the author allows the reader to personally experience and understand a medical examiner's professional and ethical duties. In addition, her candid stories disprove the stereotypically derived cold personality associated with a medical examiner. She describes many instances in which a medical examiner's compassion, meticulousness, and diligence allow detectives to ring the bells of justice and ultimately, bring peace or closure to the dead victims' families.
