Born to a wealthy and powerful yakuza boss, Shoko Tendo lived the early years of her life in luxury. However, when she was six, everything changed: her father was jailed, and the family fell into debt. Bullied by her classmates because of her father's activities, and terrorized at home by her father, who became a drunken, violent monster after his release from prison, Tendo rebelled. As a teenager she became a drug addict and a member of a girl gang. At the age of 15 she spent eight months in a juvenile detention center after getting into a fight with another gang.

During Japan's bubble economy of the eighties, Tendo worked as a bar hostess, attracting many rich and loyal customers, and earning money to help her family out of debt. But there were also abusive clients, one of whom beat her so badly that her face was left permanently scarred. Her mother died, plunging Tendo into a depression so deep that she tried to commit suicide.

Somehow, Tendo overcame these tough times. A turning point was getting a full-body tattoo with a design centered on a geisha with a dagger in her mouth, an act that empowered her to change her life. She quit her job as a hostess. On her last day at work, she looked up at the full moon, which became a symbol of her struggle to become whole, and the title of the book she wrote as an epitaph for herself and her family.

The paperback edition of Yakuza Moon features 16-pages of never-before-seen photos of Tendos youth, family, and tattoos, as well as a new foreword by the author, describing her life since the book was first published four years ago.

Tendo, the daughter of a yakuza (mob) boss, grew up in 1970s and '80s Japan, living through the booms and busts of life on the wrong side of the law. Many plants are listed along with a bit of advice as to what the herb is used for. Many of the photos are a bit fuzzy in appearance to me. If a person does not already know from a clearer photo, the plant they are looking for, they may not feel confident using the photos from this book. Detailed written descriptions are given for the plants. Some of the plants also give general advice for preparation.

Small book by dimensions but has a lot of info. I wish it had a little bigger and more photos along with more info about preparing the herbs and a geographical map where the plants are located.

this guide will assist you in identifying western plants that have medicinal uses. I currently own 8 books on western medicianal plants. if i had purchased this one first i would not have purchased any of the others.

pics are kinda small but informative .

About the Author

Nigel Lowe has been a Professor of Law at Cardiff Law School since 1991. His main areas of interest are family law, child law, international family law, and contempt of court.


Gillian Douglas is Professor of Law at the Cardiff Law School and Head of Department. She obtained her LLB at Manchester University and her LLM at London University (the London School of Economics). She previously taught at the University of Bristol and was a Visiting Teaching Fellow at the National University of Singapore. Her main research interest is family law, on which she has written extensively. She is the joint case comments editor of the journal Family Law and co-editor of the Child and Family Law Quarterly.

Anthony Pagden is Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Political Science and History at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has been a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford; Senior Research Fellow of the Warburg Institute, London; Professor of History at the European University Institute, Florence; University Reader in Intellectual History and Fellow of King's College, Cambridge; and the Harry C. Black Professor of History at The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of more than a dozen books, many of which have been translated into a number of European and Asian languages. His most recent publications include Worlds and War: The 2,500-Year Struggle between East and West (2008) and The Enlightenment: And Why It Still Matters (2013). About the Author

Dennis K. Lieu is professor of mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was formerly the associate dean of student affairs. He also received his B.S., M.S., and D.Eng. in mechanical engineering from U.C. Berkeley. After working for six years as a design engineer in industry, he returned to his alma mater to join its faculty. Professor Lieu has taught engineering graphics for over 25 years and has been a member of the Engineering Design Graphics Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for 23 years. His research interests are in the design of electro-mechanical machines and the design of sports equipment, and he is the author or co-author of numerous articles on engineering graphics education. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa, as well as a recipient of the University of California Distinguished Teaching Award and the Orthogonal Medal awarded by North Carolina State University, for his contributions to engineering graphics education.

I bought this a used book without a CD, as a reference for my job as a Mechanical Engineer who does a lot of CAD work and Thin-Line sketches. I particularly bought it for chapters 15-17 (dimensioning, tolerancing, and fasteners), which were areas I needed to brush up in. I get the used book, only to find out that the last four chapters (the chapters I needed the most) can only be found on the CD... and I just bought it without the CD. Had I known beforehand that these chapters were only on CD, I wouldn't have bought the book in the first place - even with the CD! I want a physical reference source, not a digital reference source.

The book was supposed to be new but it was NOT. However it was like a new book and the price was great. I am okay with this purchase but dishonesty makes me don't purchase from them again.

"The seller is great. The book however has much to be desired. For CADD and hand drawings in general, it's okay. But, if you need help learning a specific CADD program (e.g. Creo, AutoCad, Inventor, SoldWorks) this book is really no help. It seems to have lots of notes about engineering standards, so it would probably be good as a reference guide for someone who already knows CADD. However, if you are new to engineering design and don't know how to opperate CADD software, then this book is not for you. I bought it for a college course but I think I've only looked at it once. So, the seller is great; the book... not so much."

Please be aware that this version (The Fundamentals of...) only includes the first 18 chapters of the full book by the same name. Unless you are a complete newb to drafting/engineering drawings, then the first 5 chapters are not so useful. Ch 6 begins solid modeling and is where the book really starts. The late teens chapters are very densely packed with lots of good information.

Book for my child for school. Nothing to "love" or "dislike" about it as it's just a school book. Purchase went smoothly.
