About the Author

Dr. Yates has extensive knowledge and experience in hazardous materials management, safety programs management, indoor air quality, ventilation, noise and sound, and industrial hygiene sampling and analysis. He was born in Morton, Mississippi, and lived most of his childhood in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. He has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Services from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, a Master of Science Degree in Hazardous Materials Management from Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science from Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi. He served ten years in the United States Navy as a Preventive Medicine Technician and currently serves in the Army National Guard as a Safety and Occupational Health Officer. In his civilian career, Dr. Yates has operated his own professional consulting firm, served as the Safety and Mission Assurance Manager for Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, the Corporate Safety Director for Bodine Services of the Midwest, Decatur, Illinois, and lead safety positions in mining and manufacturing. Currently, he serves as the Safety Manager for FMC Corporation, Green River, Wyoming, which has both MSHA and OSHA facilities. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

I purchased this book in March. Read it twice, studied the key notes in the back of each Chapter and highlighed the tar out of the book.. On May 25 I passed my ASP and July 5 I passed my CSP....that's only 41 days between tests. This was my primary study material for both tests. I also read the first half of Braur's Safety for Engineers (good book, but the Yate's book is the bomb!!), took some mini tests from Pocket Prep (Android App) and took the BCSP self assessments.I got to work today and the first thing I did was put it on my bookshelf, so I'll keep it handy forever. In addition to this being an incredible study guide it is a wonderful resource guide.

This is a GREAT book if you are a Safety Professional, someone who is interested in getting into the field, or someone that needs information and needs a reliable source to refer to. I bough the first edition a few years ago to use as a guide for some of the more technical issues I ran into as a Safety Professional. I decided earlier this year that I wanted to go ahead and take my Associate Safety Professional (ASP) exam through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. I did use other material but I bought and used the second edition as my primary study guide. I passed my ASP exam yesterday and have to give this text a lot of the credit. I used it almost every day at work for one reason or another. If you are planning on taking the ASP or CSP exam I would recommend you make this one of your primary sources of study. If not it will serve you well as a guide in your everyday tasks. Good luck and be safe!

If you're planning to take the ASP examination, spend the money to buy this book. There is no better prep out there. The questions from the test are literally pulled from this resource. Spend the money to prep, it will more than pay off when you take the examination.

Given that not many comprehensive books are available for ASP/CSP prep, this could be considered a good reference. However, it is full of mistakes and calculation errors. I wish the author had someone review it before they decided to publish the book OR, at the very least, republish another edition that is not flooded with errors. If you really rely on this book, you will have a tough time preparing for the exam and it may even discourage you when you solve a math related problem and get an answer different than author's (which in most cases is a calculation error on the author's part). Moreover, 30-35%% of questions I encountered during the exam were not covered under the material in the book. I would have not recommended this book if there were other better options available.

I bought this book to help me prepare for my CSP (Certified Safety Professional) Test. I literally only read the "key notes" at the end of each chapter and passed the exam the first time. I also used the SPAN online platform to help study for the CSP. I studied both for approximately 3 days! I have since read the entire book and have to say this book is filled with great information!

I will preface this review by stating that I haven’t taken my exam yet so the success of the study guide is pending. I will say it is very comprehensive in relation to topical discussions. Overall, it provides a great reference book, however in the second edition, some information is outdated and not accurate. The citation dollar values are incorrect, fall protection has been added to General Industry standards, nothing about electronic record keeping, etc. with that said, theses are small issues as any practicing safety professional should be keeping up to date on theses changes. That is the only reason I give it 4 stars, otherwise a solid 5. GREAT foundational book for the safety professional. Will buy newest edition if and when it is available.

The book came in pristine condition. Every safety practitioner should have this book in their library, as it contains information on so many topics. The information is broken down and written non-technically and gets straight to the point. It’s surprisingly easy to read.

Great for reference. I haven't taken the ASP exam yet but I'm guessing this will have been a worthwhile tool for the exam as well as a daily work reference.

'There are no walls around the house here.' I wrote in my diary, in an entry dated December 24, 1967. This was a few days after my arrival in America. It took me years to realize that in America other kinds of walls, mainly invisible, existed. I had to learn about their presence, respect their sovereignty, abide by their rules. I could not neglect them, trespass them. I could not disregard them. This meant not only learning the English language but also mastering the metalanguage, the verbal and nonverbal codes of interactions, the different systems and styles of communication.

I'm disappointed with this purchase for several reasons. The first is that there are several very basic typos and informational errors that should not have slipped through editing. There are a few grammatical errors which are understandable as I assume Mr. Wintermeyer's first language is German, but those show a lack of polish.I paid $47 and change for this volume, and at that price point, I expect something on the level of The Rails 5 Way. It, too, has the occasional typo, but it does not have factually contradictory statements (that I can find). In this book, we are told that passing an argument of "false" to a function returns both extra information and truncates the extra information (within about 4 or 5 pages). There are snippets of console response that are clearly copy-pasted from a previous command that should show different output, in an example where the output is what's being discussed.In addition, the information is extremely basic and terse. This is a great primer for beginners, and has almost no value to anyone who has read any other book about Rails. It moves quickly, and would be well-suited to an established developer who has never seen a line of Rails code and wants to get the basics fast.The last disappointment was the Active Storage chapter, the main addition of 5.2. The railsguides.org section on Action Storage actually contains more information and examples.In short, this is a primer and is, in my opinion, vastly overpriced for the value of its information. The style is accessible and the plain language is easily understandable. The approach is sound and the pacing good for a very shallow dive (not a bad thing) into concepts.I don't think I can ask for a refund, so I console myself with the thought that at least I supported a developer who is making an effort to provide education. I would recommend this book not be purchased outside the $10-$20 range unless it is greatly expanded.

I have been a pro Rails developer for some time now. The earlier version of this book plus another book were the books that really made me love the Rails framework. This is actually the book that got me going. With very limited knowledge, I had struggled to understand some basic concepts in web development but getting this book turned things around.In every endeavour, there has to be some foundation, some fundamental but essential knowledge that will demystify some seemingly ‘scary’ concepts, for me and Rails this was the book I had been missing.I knew what cookies were previously but didn’t understand how sessions were and how they worked with Rails. It’s with such knowledge that I gained from this book that would later help me to fully understand how login/logout works and even build my own from scratch without a gem.Rails 5.2 comes with new concepts like ActiveStorage, I turned again to this book to get just an idea what the hell it is and how it works and trust me, this book does a good job at showing what you need to know; couple that with the Rails Guides and you’re set to writing code that works…quickly.Mind you, it’s not for everyone. No single book can provide everything if we treat them only as a resource. Common sense with leveraging other resources for any skill is necessary, for me, this book and good ol’ Google saw me through my early days.

This book is a great way to pick up Ruby (it’s covered in the book) and Rails for beginners.In general, this book consists of the sequential presentation of Rails libraries.Besides, the book has dedicated chapters to:* caching;* advanced SQL queries;* working with sessions;* setup Rails for the production environment;* deployment.Which are, IMO, usually lack in other Rails books.I think that the information gathered in this book is very helpful for beginners.

Not only is Stefan's book thorough, but it provides beginners with a solid foundation (such as proper scaffolding and caching) that many other books often lack. Using the "Rails way" Stefan explains how to build better web applications by focusing on speed and optimization. Two thumbs up!
